This garden is about an acre in size and is attached to a large red brick house with a signficant history. Recently converted from a school the garden on my arrival was all laid to lawn with some mature trees along the eastern boundary. The clients required a new tennis court which became an challenge to integrate into the garden.

I like to create routes and paths throughout large gardens to open it up to exploration, create vistas and relaxing areas and this garden is no exception. Try to think of a garden as an ancient forest criss-crossed by paths; within that forest there will be open spaces, or galades, within the forest which you would come across by accident. You may see this space initially from afar because there is a pool of light in the distance. As it gets larger you begin to take in the area and perhaps discover a forest pool or a large spreading tree. Now transfer this concept to the large garden by creating garden glades filled with interest. The above photo shows a framed "glade" with a summerhouse, beautiful trees, shrubs and sunlight filtering through the robinia on the left.

The addition of carefully placed pergolas adds to the woodland feel and helps to screen the tennis court.
