Very Small Courtyard Garden

The photographs below tell the story of this delightful small garden. The unusual shape has been used to enhance the area. There are 3 techniques for making a small garden appear larger and they have all been employed in this tiny garden.
The first is to hide the perimeter; lines in fences and walls act the same way as patterns on house interior walls which make the rooms feel smaller. Plants of different shapes and sizes are used to break up and hide the edges.
The second is to emphasise the longest line in the garden which runs diagonally from corner to corner; here the line separating the patio from the lawn does just that. It also leads the eye into the area under the pergola which is slightly obscured.
The third is to design the garden so that the whole of it cannot be seen in one go. This gives a visitor the idea that there is always something left to explore. In this garden the tranverse pergola marks an area of the garden separated from the main part.

Finally, the photos of the garden after 10 years show how important it is to ensure the new garden is constructed to a high standard. I Here, although some of the planting needs some attention, you can see everything is still sound.
